Day 6 (235 miles): Akureyri to Reykjavik - Víðimýrarkirkja turf church, Grabok Crater, Brautarholtskirkja, Icelandic Horses
We had our longest drive planned on Day 6, but not many stops planned. The drive was of course scenic, as it had been on every other day.
Víðimýrarkirkja Turf Church
Our last turf church was near Varmahlid. There's a visitor center in town with a gift shop and a very helpful and friendly staff member. The church here was built in 1834, but has been around since the 12th century.
We stopped in Hvammstangi for lunch at Sjavarborg Restaurant, a very chic place for such a small village. Hvammstangi is apparently known as a seal watching town. I had a really great burger (big surprise) with tempura langoustine. The thing about Iceland is that they have a variety of sauces like mayonaise, cocktail sauce, and thousand island that are similar to American sauces but not quite the same. The mayo is very sour and weird. Ketchup is extremely sweet. All of the fries we had in Iceland were amazing, regular fries, waffle fries, sweet potato fries, all great!
Grabrok Volcanic Crater
Grabrok is a 3400 year old volcanic crater than you can climb to the top of and walk around. The colors around the crater are starkly different than the surrounding geography, and it's a quick climb to the top with some beautiful scenery.
Brautarholtskirkja
This church is considered a descendant of the first church of Iceland, which existed in the year 900.
Icelandic Horses
Near the church we met some very friendly horses. When I started petting one, the whole herd came running!
We ended our day in Reyjavik with amazing pasta at Rossopommodoro.
